Newcastle United will face Hull City in the quarter finals of the EFL Cup.

Newcastle United and cup success have never really seen eye to eye.

The last time the Magpies won a major domestic cup was 1955. That means Newcastle fans have suffered decades of hurt in this respect.

While some fans cling on to the not-so-infamous Intertoto Cup victory from 2006, as well as winning the Championship in 2010, Newcastle have not raised any serious silverware for more than half a century.

During Alan Pardew’s tenure, the domestic cups were pushed to one side, with the Premier League deemed to be the number one priority for the club, meaning weakened Newcastle sides were put out in the FA and League Cup – which inevitably ended in an embarrassing exit for the Magpies.

Under Rafael Benitez, things may have changed. Newcastle have guided their way to the quarter finals of this season’s EFL Cup, where they will face a struggling Hull City side. Benitez’s men have been impressive in the competition, easily getting past Cheltenham Town, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Preston North End.

They may have had some luck with the draws, but Newcastle have a real chance of going all the way in this competition, and HITC Sport’s Michael Ramsay went to find out if the Geordie masses think Newcastle can win the whole thing.
