Newcastle United fans relive the highs of supporting their club – as well as some lows.
Depending on which generation you are from, you either have great memories of supporting Newcastle United, or you have endured a largely disappointing time following the club.
While younger Newcastle fans have had to suffer relegation in both 2009 and 2016, the more senior members of the Toon Army have witnessed many great moments in years gone by, as HITC Sport’s Michael Ramsay found out on a recent trip to talk to the supporters.
Kevin Keegan during his second, less pleasant, spell as manager
Between 1992 and 1997, Newcastle fans witnessed Kevin Keegan’s entertainers – arguably the Magpies’ greatest ever side – playing vibrant and attacking football, capturing the hearts of the nation and almost winning the Premier League crown.
During that time Newcastle fans witnessed one of the club’s greatest ever victories, beating the Red Devils 5-0 at St James’ Park, with Philippe Albert’s chip capping off a sensational performance in black and white.
Shearer scores for Newcastle
Other great memories were supplied by a famous number 9 who goes by the name of Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s record goalscorer, with fans citing the time he scored his 200th Newcastle goal as one of the best moments they’ve ever witnessed.
While the low moments centred around relegation and losses to rivals Sunderland, the nostalgia of days gone by can get Newcastle fans dreaming of great times ahead with Rafael Benitez now in charge.
