Speaking on the Talking Transfers Podcast, Graeme Bailey has been discussing Liverpool and the injury to Virgil van Dijk.
The Dutch defender went down against Brentford on Monday, and it was very quickly reported that the injury was worse than first feared.
However, in Jurgen Klopp’s press conference, the German confirmed that Van Dijk was facing around a month on the sidelines – not the worst prognosis in the world.
Unfortunately though, according to Bailey, the injury may actually be worse than Klopp is letting on, stating that his sources at Liverpool were concerned that his injury was a season-ender when it initially happened.
All in all, Bailey isn’t convinced that Van Dijk will be back in action in four weeks’ time.
Van Dijk set for extended period out
The journalist discussed this injury situation.
“They’re going to be losing Van Dijk for a month. I’m not saying I don’t believe Klopp, but I don’t believe Van Dijk will be playing in one months’ time, I really don’t. They were very worried this was a season-ender when he did it, he hopes for a month, but I don’t see it,” Bailey said.
Season-defining
Van Dijk’s injury prognosis could end up being season-defining for Liverpool.
We’ve seen this exact situation play out before in the 2020/21 season, and this time it could be much worse.
Indeed, while Van Dijk’s absence was felt in 2020/21, Liverpool still managed to finish third. Right now, Liverpool are sixth and that’s after having the commanding centre-half in the team for half a season.
If Van Dijk isn’t back in action soon, the Reds may have to kiss goodbye to any chance they have of winning any sort of major silverware this term.
