Tony Cascarino has told talkSPORT (14/07/21 at 7:05 am) that Southampton fans should be ‘very worried’ about losing reported Tottenham and Aston Villa target, Danny Ings this summer.
The Radio pundit made it clear that the Saints could get relegated if they sold Ings, with Spurs and Villa showing interest in his services.
The Telegraph have reported that they want the Englishman to play alongside Harry Kane this summer, whilst Villa are trying to lure the contract-rebel towards their direction.
Ings has one year left on his St Mary’s deal and he could leave on a free next summer.
But Cascarino shared that Southampton might as well lose him for nothing in 12 months, rather than get relegated with him for the forthcoming season.
“If I was a Southampton fan then I would be very worried,” said Cascarino. “I wouldn’t be selling him for £20 million even if he has a year left on his contract.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t. How much money to stay in the Premier League? I understand he has a year to go. I wouldn’t want to be selling him at all.
“He’s a very gifted lad, who does a lot of the ugly side and a talented forward. I don’t think you can replace him even close to that.
“They can go down losing a player of that quality. They have a year to prepare for that (losing him on a free next summer).”
It seems as though every summer a number of Premier League clubs need a striker, but Spurs and Villa shouldn’t really put themselves in that boat.
They have Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins at the top of the pitch and it’s more of needing depth in quality.
If Spurs can offer Ings the chance to play alongside Kane then moving to North London might be a good idea.
But if he cannot, just like Villa probably won’t be able to, then he is perhaps better off staying put in the South Coast, especially for Southampton’s own good.
