Whatever happens, Leeds United have to sign an ugprade on Ezgjan Alioski this summer.
That’s the view of former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who told Stadium Astro that the Macedonia international is ‘very, very poor’ defensively and vulnerable to being targeted by opposition wingers.
Robinson said: “Left back has to be a priority for them. As good as Alioski was going forward, he’s very, very poor defensively. He has cost Leeds goals this season and he is targeted by other teams. Brighton did it last week and we saw Gareth Bale do it today again.”
Alioski is in a tricky situation because his Leeds contract expires next month and it remains to be seen if he’ll be handed a new deal.
That being said, he did his chances no harm at all with a brilliant performance in the 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday – and despite what Robinson said, Bale didn’t cause him that many problems.
The former Lugano attacker fizzed in the cross which saw Patrick Bamford tap the Whites into a 2-1 lead before the break.
And yes, Robinson is right in saying that he is suspect defensively, having conceded a silly penalty in the defeat by Brighton last week.
But we’re talking about a player who has appeared in 33 of Leeds’ 35 Premier League games this season, starting 26 of them.
Marcelo Bielsa is clearly a big fan of the 29-year-old and that counts for a hell of a lot, when you consider the Argentine’s standing in football.
