Speaking on his podcast, Glenn Hoddle has lavished praise upon Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo, comparing his range of passing to Kevin De Bruyne’s.
The former Tottenham star says he’s been very impressed with Cancelo’s ability to drop into the midfield and his incredible ability on the ball.
“He’s a very, very good passer of the ball. The thing is at the moment, Man City don’t get tested too much defensively, because they’ve got the ball the most of the time, so he hasn’t been tested that much defensively, but with the ball he’s excellent,” Hoddle said.
“Whether he plays in a back for, or he sneaks into midfield as an extra midfield player. He’s got a pass on him, he can hit passes and every now and then he’s like a De Bruyne passing it. You know, it’s like an added thing to their system.”

The ex-England manager is spot on, Cancelo does add an extra dynamic to City’s midfield.
Being compared to Kevin De Bruyne, especially in terms of passing the ball, is a huge compliment, but Cancelo is more than deserving of that label.
His technique, his vision and his ability to get into the right positions makes him not only one of the best full-backs in the country, but one of the best midfielders.
He’s a real footballer’s footballer, and you can understand why Hoddle appreciates him so much.
