Joleon Lescott has suggested that Eddie Howe might be tempted to quit Newcastle United if the England job became available after the World Cup.

Howe is working wonders on Tyneside and he’s only been Steve Bruce’s replacement for about a year.

The Magpies are fourth in the Premier League standings after losing only one this season – and even that required a 95th-minute winner from Liverpool at Anfield.

Newcastle, who won 2-1 at Tottenham last time around, are going about their business very quietly but very effectively and the 44-year-old manager is getting much of the plaudits.

But Lescott has told LiveScore that Howe – or ‘any Englishman’ – would be tempted by the Three Lions gig if it was offered.

He said: “Is any Englishman able to turn down the national job when it becomes available, though? I think it would be a very tough role to reject!”

The former Manchester City and Everton defender did mention that he didn’t believe Howe would quit Newcastle for England.

And hell, the Magpies’ manager even admitted himself in September [The Athletic] that he isn’t interested in the role.

But Lescott is certainly right in saying that it must be tempting, particularly if Gareth Southgate leaves after the World Cup in Qatar.

However, is it more exciting than the project at Newcastle? Arguably not.
