‘Very talented’: Nagelsmann and Matthaus think reported Liverpool target is special

While many Bayern Munich fans have been left disappointed by the news that B-team starlet Angelo Stiller has rejected a new contract with the Bundesliga champions, the midfielder’s departure pales into insignificance when discussing the future of another fresh-faced youngster.

While Stiller has grown frustrated with life on the periphery at the Allianz Arena, Jamal Musiala is quickly becoming one of the first names on Hansi Flick’s star-studded team-sheet; at the age of 17, no less.

Bayern’s high-profile pursuit of Callum Hudson-Odoi might have ended in failure, but a teenager they did manage to lure away from Stamford Bridge is shaping up to be even more exciting.

After becoming the club’s youngest ever Bundesliga goal-scorer a few months ago, Musiala has started three of Bayern’s last four games in all competitions, scoring against RB Leipzig and dazzling on Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano turf in the Champions League.

Musiala is as mature as he is mercurial and it is no surprise that, with 18 months left on his contract, the Premier League vultures are circling.

The Mail claims that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is a huge fan of the one-time Stamford Bridge starlet.

He is not the only one.

“Sometimes he plays as a six, sometimes eight or ten,” 1990 Ballon d’Or winner Lothar Matthaus said this week. “He reminds me a lot of another player.”

Matthaus, in case you were wondering, was referring to himself.

“He’s a very talented man,” Julian Nagelsmann explained after the recent 3-3 draw between Bayern and Leipzig (Sport1). “Musiala scored a great goal and had a lot of other good actions.

“He interprets the position he took over from (Javi) Martinez very offensively. He is very safe on the ball.”

The Mail adds that treble-winners Bayern Munich are desperate to tie Musiala down to a new long-term contract in order to ward off interest from abroad.

And Hansi Flick, the coach responsible for throwing the 17-year-old in at the deepest of deep ends, would surely swoon at the sight of Musiala putting pen to paper.

“Jamal plays in Munich in a team peppered with top players,” Flick said, via Kicker.

“He is highly valued (by his Bayern team-mates) because he has enormous composure on the ball, a strong dribble and is, in one-on-one situations, he is difficult to stop.”
