Mikel Arteta has praised Emiliano Martinez on Arsenal’s official website, just over a year after selling him.

Martinez praised

Arteta allowed Martinez to join Aston Villa from Arsenal in a decision which has gone on to be widely criticised.

The Argentine stopper has developed into one of the most reliable keepers in the Premier League since his move to Villa.

He has also become his country’s number one, with his reputation increasing exponentially.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have seen Bernd Leno become their number two now – with Aaron Ramsdale joining in the summer.

It is arguable that Arsenal would have been far better off keeping Martinez around and keeping him as their first choice.

But Arteta says that he is comfortable with the decision that he made to sell the 29-year-old.

He said: “We made decisions with the best possible intentions and looking for the best interests of the club, but as well it was a very strong participant, it was Emi, who deserves all the credit for the amount of time he spent at the club and don’t forget that he had different spells in his career and he got to a point in his career when under me he started to play in important games and he did extremely well.

“His ambition, his belief and where wants to take his career was very different and it was urgent for him because he was so patient for so long and I’m really happy that he’s doing so well.

“He’s a great keeper, I played with him, I managed him, and he has tremendous personality as well and he’s showing that at Aston Villa and the national team. I can say that I’m happy for him.”

Arsenal v Aston Villa

Arsenal will come into direct competition with Martinez later this evening.

The Gunners are set to take on Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium, in what looks like it could be another tough test for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal are currently sat one place above Villa in the Premier League table, having taken 11 points from their opening eight games this term.
