Aston Villa fans provided a mixed reaction on Twitter to Frederic Guilbert honestly opening up about his current situation at the club.

The Frenchman told We Are Malherbe Podcast via the Birmingham Mail that a move to Caen ‘fell through’ this summer after he was told by the club that he is now third-choice.

Dean Smith was a busy man once again over the summer and one of his deals caught the eye because he decided to bring Nottingham Forest right-back Matty Cash to Villa Park.

That meant that Villa now have Cash, Ahmed Elmohamady and Guilbert as his right-back options, with the latter now clearly third-choice.

Some Villa fans feel the energetic right-back has been harshly treated, whilst others think he struggled last season and deserves to be in this current situation.

For most parts last season, Villa struggled in all departments, especially their defence, as it now seems Guilbert is the one being made the scapegoat.

Whilst many of the Villa players struggled from a defensive standpoint last season, it’s pretty harsh just putting Guilbert under the spotlight because this was a team problem, not an individual issue.

Either way, he now finds himself struggling to get into Smith’s matchday 18 and given that Villa have made a 100% start in the league, it seems as though he will be watching from afar for now.

Here is a selection of Villa supporters reacting to Guilbert’s claims.
