Michael Owen expressed his surprise by the drop in form of Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min this season and how it’s all ‘very strange’.

The former England striker added that it wasn’t so long ago that Son could put his name up alongside some of the Premier League’s best, but now his form has fallen off a cliff.

The 30-year-old scored Premier League goal number 99 of his career at the weekend when Spurs beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 after their midweek Champions League exit.

That was only Son’s third goal when starting this season and a huge drop off from the player that, this time last season, was pushing Mohamed Salah for the Golden Boot.

In truth, Antonio Conte’s side are still in and around where they were last term. Still getting knocked out of Europe and to Championship teams in domestic competitions.

Added to that, Harry Kane is better than ever before, so it has to be questioned what has happened to Son, which was raised by Michael Owen, as he told MatchDay Extra on Premier League Productions (11/03/23 at 5:10 pm).

“Nearly into the 100 Premier League club and Son deserves to because he has been an incredible player over the years,” said Owen. “But, this season, has been very strange.

“You don’t really associate world-class players with having big, big dips in form. Okay, two or three games. It’s astonishing because, you could argue two or three years ago, that he is right up there in the top handful of players in the Premier League. The most effective at one point.

“But this season has been a real drop off. I don’t know whether it’s confidence or the team he is playing in. It’s good to see him flying again.”

CAN SON FINISH OFF STRONGLY?

It needs to be noted that Son went on a madness during the last few months of the previous campaign, including scoring a hat-trick at Villa Park, a goal and assist against Arsenal and a brace on the final day.

Perhaps the £22 million star (FourFourTwo) will back himself to do the same as Spurs, once again, try to secure Champions League football.

The difference this time around is that they are the ones being chased, with Newcastle United and Liverpool right on their tails.
