Andy Cole has questioned on TalkSport (18/10/20 at 3:45 pm) as to why Jose Mourinho didn’t start Matt Doherty against West Ham on Sunday as he dubbed the decision ‘very strange’.

The former Premier League striker thinks Tottenham’s summer signing is the ‘better’ player between Doherty and the man who did start, Serge Aurier.

That’s another game this season that Mourinho has opted to leave Doherty on the bench and it has to be questioned why the man brought in to push Aurier isn’t earning more game time.

Cole mentioned how both from an attacking and defensive standpoint, Doherty is better than the former PSG man, but he still finds himself as second-choice.

“I think it’s very strange,” Cole told TalkSport. “When you chase someone in the summer. You bring them in, especially Doherty.

“Aurier was on the verge of going to AC Milan. That didn’t work out then he [Doherty] is not playing. You have to question it. I know he [Aurier] scored against Manchester United, but me personally, I still think Doherty is the better fullback.

“Now, whether it’s wingback or fullback. I think defensively and attack-wise, he’s still a better fullback – I don’t think Aurier is the one for me.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signings

  1. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

    £15 million; Southampton

  2. Joe Hart

  3. Matt Doherty

    £13 million; Wolves

  4. Sergio Reguilon

    £25 million; Real Madrid

  5. Gareth Bale

    Loan; Real Madrid

  6. Carlos Vinicius

    Loan; Benfica

  7. Joe Rodon

    £12 million; Swansea

Doherty had to watch on from the sidelines as Spurs somehow managed to throw away a three-goal lead during the final 10 minutes.

Aurier was actually involved in that stoppage-time equaliser because he was the one who gave away the free-kick which led to Manuel Lanzini’s thunderbolt.

But some have argued that Aurier’s challenge on Robert Snodgrass wasn’t a foul. Either way, it cost Spurs dearly.
