Michael Owen has backed Newcastle United’s reported pursuit of Eddie Howe.
According to The Telegraph, Howe has agreed in principle to become the next Newcastle boss at St James’s Park.
This comes after the Magpies tried and failed to appoint Unai Emery a little earlier this week.
But the 43-year-old is reportedly set to sign a two-and-a-half year deal in the North East.
And here’s how former Newcastle hitman Owen reacted on Twitter:
Good choice?
Well that remains to be seen, but he is certainly better qualified than Graeme Jones to lead United forward in the short term anyway.
Howe’s last act in management was to suffer relegation with Bournemouth in 2020.
But the young manager’s brilliant work with the Cherries prior to that point, getting them promoted a number of divisions, makes him the best available candidate it would seem.
There’s also been talk of Paulo Fonseca but, first and foremost, Newcastle need a head coach with Premier League experience.
With the Magpies in the relegation zone and six points adrift of safety, knowledge of English football could be paramount and that’s what Howe brings.
Whether he’s the right man long term remains to be seen.
