Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher has been discussing Arsenal’s shape and Alexandre Lacazette’s role in the Gunners’ attack.
The Frenchman has been resurgent in recent weeks, and Carragher has been impressed by the role he’s taken up.
Indeed, while Lacazette has made his name as a more traditional number nine, he’s been playing a deeper role in recent weeks, with Carragher noting that Lacazette has been playing in a similar manner to Phil Foden.
What’s been said?
Carragher was analysing Arsenal’s attack.
“I just want to show you the problems it causes opposition teams in that position. You can see Lacazette there, he’s come very deep and that’s very reminiscent of where we see Phil Foden at times,” Carragher said.
“As we see so often with Man City and now with Arsenal, you have that front five. Look at Lacazette, he’s actually deeper than Xhaka and Odegaard in their positions.”

The Pep effect
Mikel Arteta was schooled by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, and you’re certainly seeing that now at Arsenal.
Indeed, it’s no coincidence that Lacazette is playing in a similar manner to Phil Foden, and for that matter, there are comparisons to be drawn between Jack Grealish and Emile Smith Rowe while Riyad Mahrez and Bukayo Saka also aren’t dissimilar.
This tactical setup is clearly something Arteta and Guardiola both agree on.
