Leeds United take on Liverpool on Tuesday night – and Jurgen Klopp has hailed Garry Monk.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has told The Mirror that Garry Monk’s move to join Leeds United ‘was a good idea’ following his exit from Swansea City.

The Reds host Leeds in the EFL Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday evening, and will be hoping to avoid an upset against the Championship side, who have been in fine form of late.

Saturday’s 2-1 win over Rotherham United means that Leeds have lost just one of their last six Championship games, and manager Monk has been taking most of the plaudits for the success this season.

Leeds currently sit fifth in the Championship table, with Monk turning the club into play-off contenders, and he looks to be the long-term manager that Massimo Cellino has been looking for having seen off the likes of Brian McDermott, David Hockaday, Darko Milanic, Neil Redfearn, Uwe Rosler and Steve Evans since 2014.

The game sees Monk go up against Liverpool boss Klopp once again, as the pair met in the Premier League last season when Monk was in charge of Swansea City, with Klopp’s side winning 1-0 at Anfield in November 2015.

A year to the day, Liverpool and Klopp will meet Monk again, and Reds boss Klopp – who hs turned Liverpool into Premier League title contenders – has had his say on Monk ahead of Tuesday’s clash.

Speaking to The Mirror, Klopp has suggested that Monk is a ‘very promising’ manager, and feels that his move to Elland Road was ‘a good idea’ having been sacked by Swansea in December.

Klopp even joked that it’s ‘half a derby’, as his best man and former Borussia Dortmund colleague David Wagner is in charge of Leeds’ local rivals Huddersfield Town.

“I think he is a very promising manager,” said Klopp. “I am happy for him that it works out for him like this. He was unlucky at Swansea and it was a good idea for him to join Leeds. Of course, tomorrow, we will see it differently. It is close to Huddersfield, so half a derby!” he added.
