Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was impressed with John McGinn’s performance for Hibernian against Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Cup.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has praised Hibernian midfielder John McGinn. Rodgers was impressed with the performance of McGinn against Heart of Midlothian on Wednesday evening.
The 22-year-old midfielder featured for Hibs against Hearts in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup at Easter Road. The youngster started the Edinburgh derby and played for the entire 90 minutes, helping his side to a 3-1 victory.
Celtic manager Rodgers was at Easter Road for the match, and he was impressed with the performance of the Scotland international midfielder.
“He’s very good,” Rodgers told The Scottish Sun about McGinn. “He looks like the type of player you love as a manager.
“I’d heard a wee bit about him without seeing a great deal of him myself. But he is very industrious and looks a great lad. He knows the game, you can see that with the way he fills in positions.
“Defensively he’s strong, he puts his foot in and can make a tackle. He doesn’t oversell himself, he’s technically very good when he tackles. Tactically he looks like he’s got a good understanding of the game.”
Summer transfer target?
Rodgers’s comments show that the Celtic manager was blown away by McGinn, and perhaps he could make a move for the youngster in the summer transfer window.
McGinn is only 22 years of age and is still developing, but he would be a good addition to the Hoops squad.
The midfielder would add depth to the squad, and working under Rodgers would help him develop and progress.
Celtic are at the top of the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 73 points from 25 matches, while Hibernian currently find themselves at the top of the Scottish Championship table with 50 points from 24 games.
