Thierry Henry stated that it’s ‘very important’ that Darwin Nunez scored the winning goal as Liverpool beat West Ham United 1-0 at Anfield on Wednesday night, as he told Amazon Prime Sport.
The legendary striker was doing punditry work at Old Trafford, as Manchester United cruised beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in an action-packed midweek round of Premier League fixtures.
Over on Merseyside, Jurgen Klopp was watching his team make it back-to-back 1-0 wins and clean sheets, after doing so against Manchester City on Sunday.
Whilst Nunez came off the bench over the weekend, with injuries to Luis Diaz, and most recently, Diogo Jota, he started against the Hammers last night.
Given the 23-year-old’s style, he has seen social media liken him to Andy Carroll, whilst the West Ham away fans couldn’t help but remind him about that yesterday.
Well, he provided the perfect answer by scoring moments after he was being taunted, as Henry made an interesting point about his goal.
“Very important for Nunez,” said Henry. “Not only that he scored, but it’s the winning goal. It’s always important for the striker when you score the winning goal.”
NUNEZ PROGRESSING WELL
Given that Liverpool lost Sadio Mane, they signed Nunez for a stupid amount and Erling Haaland was entering the building at Manchester City, then there was a lot of noise around Nunez’s arrival.
All of that didn’t help matters because, as soon as something went wrong, then those critics were waiting in the wings ready to take him down with all their might and aggression.
And whilst the Uruguay striker has had some questionable moments, overall, he has shown promise, threat and a level of progression.
12 games in since signing from Benfica, he has five goals and one assist to his name, that’s pretty good going since he’s yet to really motor forward.
