Aston Villa’s Matty Cash has posted on Instagram that today is a ‘very important and proud’ day for him as he earns Polish citizenship to represent the country.
The 24-year-old will now play for Poland on the international stage and the Villa man should be available for their World Cup qualifiers next month.
This is what Villa’s right-back emotionally posted on Instagram to Polish supporters following that switch.
This is a career-changing move for the Slough-born player, who is now in line to feature at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
It isn’t a surprise he has opted to make such a call because the depth in quality at right-back for England is pretty ridiculous.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has a Premier League and Champions League medal in his cabinet, was seemingly out of the England picture at the start of the year.
Then, as Euro 2020 drew closer – and before he got injured, Gareth Southgate selected the Liverpool man, but it did seem as though it was at the last push.
One thing is for sure, even TAA isn’t a regular for his country.
Therefore, it’s understandable if a player like Cash looks on from afar and thinks he has no chance of getting picked by England, even if he performs at the highest level.
Given the number of quality right-backs Southgate has to choose from, this upcoming generation may find that some of them will miss out on England caps and call-ups, altogether.
Nonetheless, rather than donning the same pitch and putting in crosses for Harry Kane, it’s Robert Lewandowski who Cash will be feeding now.
