Ledley King has backed Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold to get the most assists ahead of the forthcoming Premier League season instead of Manchester City’s, Kevin de Bruyne.

The Tottenham legend added that, if Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘plays in that midfield role’, then he can see him singing and dancing for Liverpool.

The former centre-back was asked ‘who will get the most assists for the 2023/24 Premier League season?’ And given that Paul Merson answered Kevin de Bruyne, it meant that King had to put someone else’s name forward.

That’s when he put Alexander-Arnold’s name on the table, as he expects the new Liverpool vice-captain to ve ‘very high up on the assists’, as he told Akshun AMA on Twitter Spaces.

Last season, the England international secured nine assists, whilst those are still healthy numbers, for someone like Trent, it’s pretty low because usually the £180k-a-week star (Spotrac) is easily hitting double figures.

In comparison, Manchester City’s Treble-winning star, to no one’s surprise, topped the list with a staggering 18, with King now sharing what will happen with the new season upon us.

“I would have gone for de Bruyne,” said King. “But I am going to go for Trent. If he plays in that midfield role, then I think he could be very high up on the assists.”

Big season coming up for Alexander-Arnold

There was a lot of noise around Alexander-Arnold last season, and for the wrong reasons.

A lot of talk about his defending, with Liverpool as a team going backwards and falling outside of the Champions League places.

But this is their chance to put things right because, if there is another slip-up, then the knives will be out and someone like Alexander-Arnold won’t survive the verbal beating from the media.

Of course, a lot will depend on how Jurgen Klopp uses him. Trent found his best form during the final few months of the campaign when he started playing in midfield, perhaps fans will see more of that?

It seems as though he needs it because it will ease the pressure on his game when he is going backwards.
