Timo Werner has paid tribute to the attacking options at West Ham United’s disposal, after Chelsea beat their London rivals 3-0 in the Premier League on Monday night, while speaking to the Blues’ website.
Frank Lampard’s side might have moved into the top five with a three-goal victory over their near neighbours but don’t let the score-line fool you. This was a game far closer than it looks on paper.
Thiago Silva’s bullet header gave Chelsea an early head-start at Stamford Bridge but West Ham dominated for long spells thereafter, seeing two goals harshly ruled out as the hosts hung onto that narrow lead with their fingernails.
That was, of course, until two Tammy Abraham tap-ins in the final few minutes added a coat of glitter to the score-line.
There were no goals for Werner, however, with the Germany international extending his barren run to a tenth successive game for club and country, firing a close-range effort straight at Lukasz Fabianski before clipping the bar late on.
Three hard-earned points against a dangerous opponent was at least some consolation for the former RB Leipzig star.
“They’re a good team and they play very good football,” Werner said.
“They are fast to the strikers and the strikers are very good, very fast and make lots of problems for defenders.”
While West Ham did indeed ‘make lots of problems’ for Chelsea’s defenders, Edouard Mendy was underworked between the sticks.
None of the Hammers’ attempts on goal hit the target during a performance which promised much but delivered little.
