Jose Enrique has heralded Liverpool’s reported plan for Virgil van Dijk.

According to The Mirror, the Reds are set to sign their towering centre-back up to a new £220k-a-week deal.

Van Dijk is technically the best defender in world football after finishing runner-up to Lionel Messi in the Ballon d’Or stakes earlier in the season.

And Enrique, who spent five years on Liverpool’s books until 2016, is delighted with the reported development. Here’s how he reacted on Instagram.

This makes a lot of sense for Liverpool.

Van Dijk is probably the finest centre-back of his generation and a contract extension would ensure that the Anfield club get his best years.

It’s frightening, but the big Dutchman is still 28 and is probably only coming into the prime of his career now.

He has won a Champions League and effectively a Premier League title in only 18 months on Merseyside, so it’s exciting to think what he could achieve by the time he leaves.
