Guy Melamed said he is flattered to emerge as a transfer target for Sunderland but, speaking to the Daily Record, the striker has refused to rule out signing a new contract with St Johnstone.

Talk about a contrast.

While the Black Cats are licking their wounds once again, destined for a fourth successive season of League One football following Saturday’s heart-breaking play-off defeat to Lincoln City, St Johnstone were swigging champagne on the hallowed Hampden Park turf.

A 1-0 victory over Hibernian saw the Buddies add the League Cup to the Scottish Cup in a suddenly-crowded trophy cabinet.

Throw Europa League qualification into the mix and it is safe to say Melamed has contributed to one of the greatest seasons in St Johnstone’s history.

Whether the 28-year-old centre-forward is sticking around for those Thursday night sojourns remains to be seen, however, with his contract expiring at the end of this month.

Sunderland are interested, although Melamed is not against the idea of sticking around for a second season at St Johnstone at this stage.

“Absolutely (I could stay). It’s an amazing place that has given me the opportunity to introduce myself in Europe and I hope we can bridge our gaps in negotiations,” said Melamed, who scored seven goals in all competitions.

“We have put together a legendary season, the best season in the history of the club and the club wants all the staff to continue. I strongly believe in the club.

”I heard from my agent (that Sunderland are keen). He told me there is interest. It’s very flattering to me. I’ll have to sit down with my agent and look at all the proposals.

“I will examine the proposals and decide what is the best place for me.”

Charlie Wyke finished 2020/21 as comfortably Sunderland’s most prolific goal-scorer, finding the net 27 times in League One.

However, with no one else in Lee Johnson’s squad hitting double figures, another number nine would not go amiss on Wearside.
