Arsenal linked playmaker Julian Draxler has endured another diffiuctl season at Paris Saint-Germain with former Les Parisiens hero Jerome Rothen admitting that he is ‘disappointed with the contribution’ of the Germany international.
At the age of 26, one of the most gifted attacking midfielders in Europe has a CV that almost anyone in football would be proud to call their own.
In three years in the French capital, Draxler has lifted eight trophies including a trio of Ligue 1 titles.
He was also part of the Germany team who conquered the world in 2014, before captaining Joachim Low’s side to Confederations Cup glory shortly after.
But, if you delve a little further, it quickly becomes clear that Draxler’s time at PSG not exactly gone to plan – from an individual perspective, at least.
The former Wolfsburg and Schalke man has slipped ever further down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel, starting just seven Ligue 1 matches in 2019/20 while failing to score a single goal in the French top flight.
A player who was tipped to drag PSG to a whole new level when he arrived in a £30 million deal has plateaued rather than progressed.
“After three years at PSG, we can be disappointed with the contribution of Draxler,” the always outspoken Rothen tells RMC. “This year, his playing time has been almost halved.
“(He produced) very few goals and assists, yet he is a quality player. There is disappointment. That PSG wishes to sell seems logical to me.
But it bothers me because he is still a young player and he must have the passion of football.”
Arsenal were linked via Fussball Transfers in May but, with funds tight at the Emirates, The Gunners could be priced out of a move for a man more than capable of replacing compatriot Mesut Ozil in north London.
BuzzSport claim that PSG are struggling to find a buyer, thanks largely to Draxler’s £120,000-a-week wages.
