Stuart Pearce has stated that Arsenal defender, Ben White, looked ‘very comfortable’ playing as a right-back for England during their 2-1 win over Switzerland in a friendly encounter at Wembley on Saturday.
The West Ham coach added that White didn’t do himself any harm with his performance for the Three Lions yesterday.
Initially, the Arsenal 24-year-old was selected from the bench, only for an injury to John Stones pushing Gareth Southgate to start White in a back three.
Things weren’t going as planned for the Three Lions in the first half, including Switzerland opening the scoring.
When Southgate, in the second half, opted to switch from a back three to a flat back four, he decided to play White as a right-back.
Pearce liked what he saw from the Arsenal man and explained how he was motoring up and down that wing, as he told talkSPORT.
“Ben White has slipped in at right-back,” said Pearce. “He has galloped up and down that wing, created and he looks very comfortable with the ball at his feet.
“I don’t think he has done himself any harm, with what he has done at centre-half and then at right-back.”
From White’s big-money transfer being questioned in the summer to possibly heading towards Champions League football.
The former Brighton man has proved a lot of people wrong and is continuing to do so.
Whilst he is thriving on the domestic stage, he is yet to cement his place in England’s squad.
The ball-playing centre-back only recently earned a recall to Gareth Southgate’s squad and he will be hoping he remains part of his plans heading towards the 2022 World Cup.
Given White’s performances, and Arsenal’s recent rise, there is no reason why he shouldn’t be on that plane to the World Cup in November.
