Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the summer transfer window before the Georgia international winger joined Napoli from Dinamo Batumi, according to journalist Miguel Delaney in his Reading the Game newsletter in The Independent (12:04pm, October 7, 2022).

The well-known and well-respected journalist has claimed that Tottenham wee among the clubs who were keen on signing Kvaratskhelia in the summer of 2022.

Delaney has added that Spurs were close to bringing the 21-year-old winger to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The journalist wrote: “Haaland isn’t the only must-watch element in European football right now. There’s also an electric Napoli team, and especially Khvicha Kvaratshkelia.

“Their form is all the more impressive given it had been anticipated this would be a transitional season for the club, after the loss of so many senior players in the summer.

“It is instead possible that the turnover, and the introduction of young players like Kvaratshkelia, might have actually perfectly suited Luciano Spalletti’s livewire approach.

“It’s of course hard to know whether it is sustainable, and this may represent a real chance for a first title since Diego Maradona and 1990, but that’s almost beside the point right now.

“They are there to be enjoyed. They are must-watch. It’s also not like no one was watching Kvaratshkelia, either. Tottenham Hotspur were very close to him in the summer.”

Maintaining interest

In our view, Tottenham Hotspur are likely to retain their interest in Khvicha Kvaratskhelia even though he is at Napoli now.

After all, the Georgia international is only 21 now.

And he is unlikely to stay at Napoli for the rest of his career.

Tottenham could make a move again for the youngster next summer or two years later.

We think that Spurs should continue to keep tabs on Kvaratskhelia and see how he progresses in Serie A.

The winger is on fire at the moment.

The Napoli star has scored five goals and provided one assist in seven Serie A starts so far this season.

Kvaratskhelia has scored one goal and provided two assists in three UEFA Champions League matches so far this campaign.
