Speaking on his YouTube channel, Goal journalist Charles Watts has shared the latest on Arsenal and their pursuit of Nuno Tavares.

The Benfica left-back has been linked with a move to north London over the past 48 hours, and while some outlets have claimed that a deal is close, Watts is getting mixed messages.

Indeed, Watts says that people in Portugal are telling him that the move is very close, while his contacts at Arsenal having been playing the transfer down.

What’s been said?

Watts shared the latest on Tavares to Arsenal.

“Arsenal are in talks with Benfica. Both sources in Portugal and England have confirmed this to me. In Portugal some sources that I have spoken to have claimed that it’s very, very close, but sources at Arsenal are trying to temper things a little bit, temper expectations, saying that they’re not quite at that stage yet. But from what I’m hearing there’s certainly growing confidence that this could be deal that is done,” Watts said.

Close

It seems as though this deal could be close.

Yes, people at Arsenal are trying to play this down, but that often happens when you’re a buying club as you try to stop other clubs picking up on the scent.

Meanwhile, people in Portugal claim that the deal is edging towards completion, and that backs up what Di Marzio reported earlier this week.

The Gunners have needed a backup left-back for some time, and it seems as though they could finally be getting their man.
