Speaking on the 1874 Podcast, Gregg Evans has claimed that Wesley is getting closer and closer to returning to first-team action for Aston Villa.

The Brazilian has been out of action for over a year now, and a lot has changed at Villa Park since he last played.

Indeed, Villa have gone from being relegation candidates to bona fide European contenders, and Wesley may have a contribution to make between now and the end of the season.

“The situation with Wesley at the moment is that he’s back in training, non-contact training with the group, ask anybody who has been out for a long spell, getting back in the group is the real key date, he’s there now,” Evans said.

“He’s got a few more painful hours, but he’s very close now and hopefully he’ll jump back into full training at some point, get an U23 game under his belt and then be available for selection.”

This is great to hear, especially after it came to light that Villa don’t plan on signing a striker this month.

Evans said earlier this week that the Midlands outfit don’t want to sign a striker because they’re planning on giving Wesley a chance when he’s back, and it seems as though he’ll be back sooner rather than later.

Ollie Watkins certainly needs some backup as he’s the only senior striker in the Villa squad right now, and while Keinan Davis is a talented prospect, he’s not experienced enough to lead the line for a club pushing for a top seven finish.

Hopefully, Wesley is back sooner rather than later and his return can send Villa up another gear.
