Daniel Ek seems to be quite serious about buying Arsenal.

The Swedish billionaire revealed on Twitter last week that he was interested in a takeover of the Emirates Stadium club, whom he has followed since the 1990s.

Arsenal’s owners Kroenke Sports Entertainment released a statement this week stating that they had no intention of selling the North London side.

But Ek revealed in an interview with CNBC on Wednesday that he was ‘very serious’ about buying his boyhood club and that he has ‘secured the funds’, with some reports in England claiming that he’s readying a £1.8 billion bid.

Stan Kroenke, Arsenal’s majority shareholder, is fiercely unpopular with the Gunners’ fanbase now more than ever following the club’s attempt to break away from UEFA to enter a European Super League, which has since been suspended.

In fact, Ek’s original tweet about buying the club came on the same day as thousands of supporters gathered outside the Emirates Stadium to protest against Kroenke and call on him to sell up.

But the Swede opted against publicly criticising Arsenal’s current ownership during his interview this week.

And former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has told talkSPORT on Thursday that it was a ‘very clever’ tactic for the sake of amicable negotiations.

He said: “He seems to be suggesting that he’s got an offer on the table, being driven through the media using language that is very, very fan-centric, which is the currency of the time right now.

“He was very clever to stop short of the broadcaster enabling him to fall into a trap where he started to vilify Kroenke and his gang because that would not help him in any negotiations.”
