Everton fans have taken to Twitter to react after Sam Allardyce discussed his time at Goodison Park ahead of West Brom’s game against the Toffees.
As quoted by the BBC, the Baggies boss said: “I would have liked to have stayed and had the investment they have had since.
“I went there when they were struggling badly, rocking on the bottom of Premier League, and finished eighth. No-one at Everton expected that.
“In the end, they made the decision to move me on. I won’t comment on whether they got it right. There have been more managers since I have been there and they have got it going in the direction they want to go – but it has taken a long time.”
Now, there are two sides to this argument.
In his defence, Allardyce was appointed to keep Everton in the Premier League, which he did.
It wasn’t pretty, and very few supporters will hold his time on Merseyside in high regard, but he did his job and helped Everton kick on to where they are now.
On the flip side, we’re not sure how the ex-England boss can complain about a lack of investment.
The 66-year-old was with the Toffees for less than a season, but was still allowed to spend £27 million on Cenk Tosun and £20 million on Theo Walcott.
For a manager who was only brought in for short-term reasons to be handed nearly £50 million is rare, so he can’t really say he wasn’t backed.
While you could argue that some of his comments are valid, Everton fans surely won’t give them a second of thought in their current situation.
The Toffees are now led by a multi-Champions League winning boss in Carlo Ancelotti, and have players such as James Rodriguez in their ranks.
