Nicolas Anelka has warned Paris Saint-Germain that letting Edinson Cavani join Newcastle United this summer would be a ‘very big mistake’, speaking during an Instagram Live session.
Whether the Ligue 1 champions share their former striker’s stance, however, remains to be seen.
Cavani is 33 years of age these days and has fallen down the pecking order at the Parc des Princes.
And with Mauro Icardi joining on a permanent deal from Inter Milan over the weekend, the veteran Uruguayan has no choice but to leave the club he helped transform into a European powerhouse if he wants to avoid another season on the bench.
Newcastle has been mentioned as a potential destination for Cavani, with the £300,000-a-week goal-machine lined up as a marquee signing should the long-awaited Mohamed Bin Salman takeover finally go through (FootMercato).
And though PSG’s all-time record goalscorer might no longer be at the peak of his powers, Anelka is at pains to point out that he still has a lot to offer.

“He makes crazy plays and he scores goals. He will serve you no matter what,” said the ex-Chelsea, Real Madrid and Liverpool frontman.
“In Paris, you need competition. He is a super striker that you risk giving to a rival – he will go to another big club. And when he plays against PSG, he will score for sure.
“And this is where they will have great regrets. To let Cavani go would be a very big mistake.”
A move to Newcastle means that Cavani is not going to be playing against PSG any time soon, however, with Steve Bruce’s side falling well adrift of the Champions League places this season.
But, according to the Chronicle, the six-time Ligue 1 winner is genuinely open to the idea of pulling on those famous black and white stripes and stepping foot into the Premier League for the first time.
Cavani leapt at the chance to spearhead the PSG project all those years ago. Could he repeat the trick at St James’ Park?
