Leeds United lost 2-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

There were some notable names missing from Marcelo Biela’s first XI, with Kalvin Phillips and Helder Costa omitted from the squad.

Costa started the 0-0 draw with Manchester United at Elland Road last week but came off injured after 72 minutes.

And the Leeds boss has confirmed that it was the same injury which kept him out at the Amex, describing it as a ‘very big knock’.

He told Leeds Live: “Costa received a very big knock in his back and it impeded him from playing the game today. The knock he received was in the game against Man United when he was substituted.”

This is bad news for fans of the West Yorkshire club.

With Phillips and Raphinha already sidelined, Leeds supporters don’t want what’s being a magnificent season to end on a damp note.

There’s absolutely no threat of relegation for 10th-placed United but, by the same token, it would be great to end the season on as strong a note as possible.

But that hope is certainly jeopardised if the Costa’s absence is a lengthy one.
