Jose Enrique has stated on Instagram that Liverpool will be making a ‘very bad decision’ by allowing Joe Gomez to leave in January.

The 24-year-old has played only 12 minutes of Premier League football this season and started four games in all competitions – three of those starts have come in the League Cup, including last night’s penalty shootout win against Leicester.

Rumours have been surfacing that a move to Real Madrid could be on the cards for Gomez amid their interest and he is ‘unhappy’ at Anfield given his lack of minutes, as reported by the Daily Mail.

After his season-ending injury last term, Gomez has returned and is now seemingly behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate in the centre-back pecking order.

It’s obvious that he was going to be behind Van Dijk, but in previous seasons, he would battle it out with Matip to play alongside the ice-cold Dutchman.

But that’s not the case now and Enrique shared his thoughts on the rumours regarding Gomez’s future.

Liverpool may well be keen to keep Gomez, but if he wants to leave then they can’t really stand in his way.

This time last season, he was an England international and now he’s nowhere near Gareth Southgate’s plans.

The former Charlton player is probably keen just to get on the pitch so he can prove his worth once more and get back into the England set-up.

Added with that, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is around the corner and Gomez will want to be putting his name forward as strong as possible.

He’s not going to do that by warming the bench at Anfield, so the best possible solution is to, not let him go on a permanent basis, but on a loan deal so he can get his engine going again.
