Jan Vertonghen has described a player Tottenham Hotspur failed to sign in the summer transfer window as a ‘super striker’.

According to Record, Tottenham added Haris Seferovic to their list of targets after missing out on ‘several’ others.

It was later claimed that Seferovic had rejected a loan move to Jose Mourinho’s team – who ultimately landed Carlos Vinicius, his Benfica teammate, instead.

The Switzerland international could come up against another Benfica colleague, Vertonghen, when his country face Belgium on Wednesday.

And ahead of the game, Vertonghen, the long-serving former Tottenham defender, told Record: “He [Seferovic] is a super striker. Last weekend he scored twice. And in the previous game, against Belgium, he also scored three times.”

Seferovic has scored six times in nine games for Benfica this season, while Vinicius has yet to open his Spurs account.

The Brazilian has only played 187 minutes of football for his temporary employers, across two starts.

And, on current form, it is likely that any striker – be it Vinicius, Seferovic or Zlatan Ibrahimovic – would struggle to displace Harry Kane from Mourinho’s eleven.

Tottenham fans – did your side sign the right Benfica striker?
