The Tottenham Hotspur man may struggle to make the first XI for the moment.
Jan Vertonghen has told Tottenham Hotspur’s official website that Eric Dier has done a cracking job in Toby Alderweireld’s absence.
The defensive midfielder, who began his Spurs career in defence, has been covering for the injured centre-back over the past month or so.
Tottenham haven’t been in the best of form since the Belgian stalwart was injured but the 22-year-old has done a fine job alongside Vertonghen nonetheless.

The ex-Atletico Madrid man is expected to be named in tonight’s squad for the Champions League visit of CSKA Moscow to Wembley.
But Vertonghen has been very impressed by what Dier has done regardless of Alderweireld’s imminent return.

He told Spurs’ website: ” I’m very happy that Toby is back in training. Obviously he’s a great player, he’s a friend but I don’t decide when he’s going to play or not.
“I think Eric Dier has done brilliantly. I’m happy to see Toby back like I’m happy to see all the guys.”
Dier might struggle for regular football in midfield due to Victor Wanyama’s superb start to life at Tottenham, though it goes to show just how strong their squad is.
