Tottenham Hotspur’s defensive success in recent seasons has been built around Belgian duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

This season they have been split up, with Alderweireld injured and then left on the sidelines due to his ongoing contract saga.

Alderweireld was recalled in midweek as Spurs rotated their team ahead of the FA Cup final.

He renewed his partnership with Vertonghen in the 1-1 draw with Brighton, and there is intrigue as to whether they will play together against Manchester United at Wembley.

Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblad spoke to Vertonghen after the Brighton game, and started their conversation with him by commenting, ‘Alderweireld is back in the team…’

Vertonghen’s response was very cagey, replying: “Yes. Everyone has done well today.”

The centre-back likely did not want to say anything out of place, as delighted as he would have been to have Alderweireld back.

It is an odd situation, with Alderweireld clearly left out due to non-footballing reasons, as good as Davinson Sanchez has been.

Vertonghen was also asked about the upcoming semi-final against Manchester United, and if there were comparisons to be made with their clash with Chelsea last season which they lost 4-2.

He confidently dispelled the link, insisting: “This year we are better off.”
