Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has told ESPN that he will “kick himself” if teammate Harry Kane scored against him at the World Cup next summer.

England go up against Belgium in Group G of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, after being drawn against Roberto Martinez’s side as well as Panama and Tunisia.

It sees Tottenham’s English stars Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier, Danny Rose, Dele Alli and of course Kane go up against their Spurs teammates Toby Alderweireld, Mousa Dembele and Vertonghen on June 28 at the Kaliningrad Stadium.

Former Ajax defender Vertonghen claimed that Kane and Alli are the dangermen for England when it comes to the World Cup clash, but claims he knows the strikers’s strengths and weaknesses.

“As far as predicting opponents, it’s hard. Especially with Harry and Dele,” Vertonghen said. “They control so many aspects of the modern game. Harry can do everything. He scores from crosses, he creates his own chances, he can get in behind.

“He knows my strengths and weakness. And it’s the same for Toby. We’ll see! I face Harry in training so I know how good he is. “Of course, it’s the same for them but I think, from experience, the advantage is with the defenders.

“Of course, if Harry scores three times in July, I’ll kick myself!”

Kane, 24, has been in magnificent form this season, scoring a hat-trick in each of his last two games and taking his overall Premier League tally to 39 – three more than Alan Shearer’s previous record from 1995.

Sitting at the top of the Premier League goalscoring rankings with 18, three ahead of Mo Salah, Vertonghen will be hoping Kane can add to that as Tottenham travel to Wales on January 2 to face Swansea City.
