Venus Williams fell short against Tatjana Maria at the Hobart International on Tuesday, but she still had plenty to be proud of.

Maria, who holds the record as the oldest winner of a WTA 500 title, came out on top 6-4, 6-3 in Tasmania. She will now move on to face Anna Bondar in the next round.

As for Williams, her focus now shifts to the Australian Open. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion has received a wildcard entry into the tournament.

Williams’ comeback has been impressive in its own right. Despite Tuesday’s loss, she should take pride in what she’s accomplished since returning to competition last July.

Tuesday brought another reason for Williams to feel good about her progress and determination.

Venus Williams and Tatjana Maria are two of the more experienced players still active on the WTA Tour.

Williams has been on the tour for almost 32 years, having first played as a 14-year-old at the 1994 Bank of the West Classic in Oakland, California.

Maria, now 38, began her professional journey at the 2006 Luxembourg Open, giving her nearly two decades of experience in the game.

According to OptaAce, their combined age of 84 years and one day made it the oldest matchup between two opponents in a WTA main draw match since the organisation’s formation in 1973.

The match was a close contest for much of it. Afterward, Maria took a moment to acknowledge Williams’ impact on the sport.

“Everybody loves Venus – I love her too!”

“My daughters are a fan of Venus, so it was tough. They said they are for me but…”

“Charlotte was so happy – she is very much like me and she was so happy to see that I am playing against Venus.”

Venus Williams looks ahead to Australian Open after loss to Tatjana Maria

Venus Williams’ next focus will be the Australian Open, where she’ll be looking to show she can still compete at a high level.

While she may lack recent match play compared to others in the field, that hasn’t stopped her from springing surprises before.

Back in July 2025, Williams made headlines by defeating world number 42 Peyton Stearns at the Washington Open.

Still, there’s some concern heading into Melbourne. Her loss in Hobart marked her fourth straight defeat on the WTA Tour, a streak that started at the Cincinnati Masters last August.
