Aston Villa midfielder Glenn Whelan came up against Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Christian Eriksen on the international stage on Friday.

A variety of fans including those of Republic of Ireland and Aston Villa have lauded Glenn Whelan for his outstanding performance against Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen on the international stage.
On Friday, Whelan’s Republic of Ireland recorded a 1-1 draw against Eriksen’s Denmark during their Euro 2020 qualifier in Copenhagen.
Whelan, who will be leaving Villa when his contract expires at the end of the month [Villa’s official Twitter account], played a defensive role for the Irish, whilst Tottenham’s Eriksen was in his typical playmaker role.
But supporters on Twitter think that the 35-year-old ‘pocketed’ Eriksen in the middle of the park, who also came up against another Villa midfielder in Conor Hourihane.
As expected, Denmark had the majority of possession and they deservedly opened the scoring after 76 minutes through substitute Pierre Emile Hoberg.
But all of that was short lived when five minutes from time, Brighton defender Shane Duffy powered home a header to hand Mick McCarthy’s side a valuable point in their race to reach Euro 2020.

Both Whelan and Eriksen played the full match for their respective countries, with the former coming into the game on the back fo helping Villa earn promotion to the Premier League, whilst the latter was part of the Tottenham team that lost the Champions League final.
