Sunderland striker Duncan Watmore is out for the rest of the season after suffering an injury against Leicester City at the weekend.

Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson praised Sunderland striker Duncan Watmore on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, December 3, 2016).

Merson praised the 22-year-old striker’s work ethic, and claimed that the youngster is like Jamie Vardy of last season without the goals.

England international striker Vardy was a key player in Leicester’s Premier League title triumph during the 2015-16 campaign.

The 29-year-old scored 24 goals and created 46 chances in 36 league matches for the Foxes last season.

“He is not a goalscorer, but he does work hard, and he is a real thorn in the defender’s side for the other team,” said Merson about Watmore on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, December 3, 2016).

“He works so hard, he is always harried. For me, he is the one who gets the crowd going.

“He is the Vardy of last year without the goals, but he will chase someone down, he will win a tackle, he will clear it, sometimes his final pass is a bit erratic.”

Merson made the aforementioned comments following Sunderland’s victory over Leicester at home at the weekend.

The Black Cats returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over the Foxes at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Watmore started the match and played for 85 minutes, when he was forced off with an injury.

As subsequently reported by BBC Sport, the Sunderland striker will miss the rest of the season scans after revealed that he has suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury.
