Van Dijk’s response when asked if Everton wanted him last summer

Everton reportedly wanted to sign Virgil van Dijk when the Liverpool defender was at Southampton.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been coy on whether Everton wanted to sign him from Southampton in the summer of 2017, as quoted by The Times.

According to a report in The Liverpool Echo in May 2017, Everton were interested in signing Van Dijk in the summer of 2017 when he was still at Southampton.

Ronald Koeman was in charge of the Toffees at the time and worked with the Netherlands international central defender at the Saints during the 2015-16 season.

The Dutchman is now in charge of the Netherlands national football team, and his compatriot Van Dijk has refused to confirm whether or not he wanted the former Celtic star in the summer of 2017.

When asked about Everton’s interest last summer, Van Dijk told The Times: “That’s something I’m not going to answer!”

Move to Liverpool

Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in the January transfer window for a fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £75 million.

The 26-year-old former Celtic centre-back, who earns £180,000 per week as salary at the Reds according to The Telegraph, is playing well for Jurgen Klopp’s side at the moment.

Liverpool are challenging for a spot in the top four of the Premier League and have also progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League this season.
