Fabrizio Romano has claimed on Twitter that Liverpool started talks with Virgil van Dijk over a new contract right after the injury he suffered against Everton.
Van Dijk suffered a long-term knee injury against Everton back in October of last year.
The Netherlands international central defender did not play again last season.
However, the 30-year-old is now fit and available to feature for the former Premier League champions.
Liverpool announced on their official website today that Van Dijk has signed a new long-term contract with the club.
Well-known and well-respected journalist Romano has claimed that Liverpool started talks with Van Dijk over a new deal right after his injury.
Classy gesture
It must have been a huge blow for Van Dijk when he suffered the injury, especially as he knew that he was going to be out for the rest of the season.
It is really classy of Liverpool to reassure the Dutchman that he was still in their plans despite the injury.
Not many clubs would have been so keen on tying down a player just after his injury.
But Liverpool are not like many other clubs.
