Virgil van Dijk felt that Thiago Alcantara was ‘unlucky’ to give away a penalty on his debut for Liverpool, as per his comments on the club’s official website.
Thiago brought down Timo Werner in the second-half, in what was the one mistake he made during his first appearance.
There appeared to be very little contact on Werner, but Thiago was still deemed to have done enough to make a foul.
And Van Dijk felt that his new Liverpool teammate was unlucky to be penalised for making such a tackle.
“It was a good performance overall. It’s not nice to give a penalty away and it was bit unlucky from Thiago [Alcantara], I think. But overall we dominated,” Van Dijk said.
“Obviously the red card helps a little bit, we can’t deny that, but even before that we created moments of danger and we were very concentrated and very ready to get the good result.”

Thankfully for Thiago, Alisson saved Jorginho’s spot kick and meant that his error did not have much impact on the match.
Aside from the penalty incident, Thiago enjoyed what was an excellent debut.
Despite only being brought on at half-time, the Spaniard quickly showed his class and quality in possession.
Thiago made the most passes any Premier League player has accumulated over 45 minutes, after dictating the play upon his arrival.
It seems only a matter of time before Thiago will be starting for Liverpool regularly, with Jurgen Klopp’s side’s next Premier League match coming against Arsenal at the weekend.
