While Reds fans were left gutted by their club coming up short, recent history shows they should not give up on getting their man.
Just last year Liverpool were reeling with embarrassment after having to apologise to Southampton for a botched approach for the defender.
They were unable to land the centre-back that summer, but even before the next transfer window re-opened, they got their man for £75 million.
This showed two things. Firstly that Liverpool do not give up on the players they want.
Fekir will surely be encouraged if Liverpool continue their pursuit of him, and it also serves to wear Lyon down.
Secondly the deal for Van Dijk shows that bridges can be mended, even if the Reds manage to burn some with Lyon over the past fortnight.
The situation with Van Dijk involved a lot more conflict with the Saints, and Liverpool managed to turn that one around.
Football is a business and ultimately money talks. The Reds are still in with a strong shout of landing the Frenchman, even if they have to wait until after the World Cup to get him.
