West Ham United and Swansea City have been linked with departing Paris Saint-Germain defender Gregory van der Wiel.
Gregory van der Wiel has told Sky Sports that he will leave Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
The 28-year-old defender joined PSG from Dutch giants Ajax in the summer of 2012, and his current contract runs out in June 2016.
“I have always given my best to secure my spot in the squad,” the Netherlands international told Sky Sports regarding the competition for the right-back spot with Serge Aurier and Marquinhos. “If that fails, it’s okay. But it is a sign that there is no confidence in me when I’m second choice.”
“I felt really bad about it at the time,” added Van der Wiel. “I was very disappointed and felt embarrassed because I do possess the quality to play Champions League matches.”
Bad news for Swansea City and West Ham United?
According to latest reports, Premier League duo Swansea City and West Ham United have been linked with the signing of Van der Wiel on a free transfer in the summer.
According to Le10sport.com, both Swansea and West Ham want to secure the services of the right-back ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.
However, Van der Wiel’s comments about his ability to play in the Champions League suggest that neither the Swans nor the Hammers would find it easy to attract him.
The Hammers narrowly missed out on a top-four spot in the Premier League this past season, while Swansea did not even finish in the top 10.
Since the Dutchman believes that he can play in the Champions League and neither of the two Premier League clubs (reportedly) interested in him can offer him that, it does not look very likely that they will get him in the summer.
