Tottenham Hotspur will be desperate to win their first top flight title since 1961.
Rafael Van der Vaart spoke to Sky Sports over the weekend, and admitted that it will be incredibly hard for Tottenham to win the Premier League title this season.
Spurs have spent heavily this summer strengthening their squad, bringing in three new signings, as well as Jack Clarke before sending him back on loan to Leeds, and they seem to be in a good position from which to challenge for the title.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men finished a distant 27 points adrift of league champions Manchester City last season, and 26 behind second placed Liverpool.
Van der Vaart still believes they are not at the same level as City or the Reds, however.
The Dutchman was a guest during Sky Sports’ showing of Tottenham vs Aston Villa on Saturday, and said:
“It’s going to be so tough. They are not strong enough to play through the whole season. Man City and Liverpool are too strong.”
Next up for Spurs is a tough trip to Man City on Saturday, before they play host to Newcastle United the following week.
Then it’s the big one – the north London derby. And Tottenham will be looking to head into the international break in September with a healthy points return from their first four games.
Because if they are to win the league this season, they can ill-afford to drop too many points.
