Sometimes the grass isn’t greener on the other side, as Georginio Wijnaldum has found out 12 months after leaving Liverpool for Paris Saint-Germain.
The 31-year-old was a well-liked figure during his time at Liverpool, but after his struggles in France, could he return to Merseyside, but don Everton colours instead?
Well, that’s what has been suggested, with the Toffees, West Ham, Leicester City and Wolves all looking at the Dutch technician.
Given Wijnaldum’s call to join PSG on a free transfer last summer, his fellow countryman, Rafael van der Vaart, did claim back in March that the midfielder made a ‘mistake’ leaving Liverpool, as quoted by talkSPORT.
Nonetheless, this is what Van der Vaart had to say about the all-round midfielder, who might be thinking about his future this summer.
“Wijnaldum made a mistake in choosing PSG,” said Van der Vaart. “Meanwhile, Berghuis made an excellent choice choosing to move from Feyenoord to Ajax.
“Now, Georginio will understand why making the right choice is so important.”
SHOULD WIJNALDUM RETURN TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE?
The man who brought Wijnaldum to Paris is now out of the door at the Parc De Princes after he was replaced by Christophe Galtier.
Heading towards his mid 30’s, and most importantly the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Wijnaldum needs to be playing on a regular basis.
It will be interesting to see how the player reacts if a Premier League team puts a concrete offer on the table for his talents.
But, in truth, it would be controversial if he did return to England, to Merseyside, yet ended up donning the colours of Everton.
Perhaps signing for the likes of Leicester or West Ham is understandable, especially the latter because they are in Europe and they need a player of his ilk and experience.
