Donny van de Beek told his Everton teammates that their performance against Manchester City ‘needs to be the standard’ now, as the Manchester United loanee posted on Instagram.
Everton suffered a 1-0 defeat to Pep Guardiola’s side in controversial circumstances on Saturday, with questions raging as to how Rodri wasn’t punished for a blatant handball in the dying moments of the game at Goodison Park.
Either way, given that he is still a Manchester United player, Van de Beek would have been more eager to impress over the weekend, and so he did, as he sent this blunt message regarding that result and Everton’s performance.
Van de Beek is settling in very well at Goodison Park and starting to find his feet under Frank Lampard.
One thing is for sure, he is far better than the minutes he got at Old Trafford and he might just prove a lot of people wrong on Merseyside.
But, he and his Everton teammates have a fight on their hands because they are hovering above the Premier League’s relegation zone.
The Toffees should still have enough to stay up because Dominic Calvert-Lewin is yet to produce his best since returning from injury.
Whilst the January signings, such as Van de Beek, Dele Alli and Anwar El Ghazi are either yet to get properly warmed up or they haven’t earned enough minutes yet.
Not since the 1950s have Everton tasted relegation and dropping down now would simply be disastrous for the club.
But, added with their own quality, there are also clubs seemingly worse off than them, so, from that aspect, they shouldn’t be too worried.
