Nicolai Jorgensen played for Feyenoord on Sunday amid links to Premier League outfit Newcastle United.
Feyenoord manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has told Fox Sports that Nicolai Jorgensen wants to join Newcastle United this month – despite the Toon having two bids rejected for his services.
The Evening Chronicle claim that Newcastle have seen two offers rebuffed for the 27-year-old’s services, as Rafa Benitez desperately looks to add a proven goalscorer to his side before Wednesday’s deadline.
Van Bronckhorst was quoted on Friday as saying he “would love to keep the team together”, but following Sunday’s 3-1 win over Ado Den Haag, the former Arsenal defender was less assured that he could keep the target man.
Van Bronchkhorst told Fox Sports, as translated by the Chronicle, that he is “waiting” for developments on Jorgensen’s future but reckons that a move to the Premier League would be hard to turn down for the 28-time Denmark international.
“I do not know what my feeling is, I have no feeling, I’m just waiting, I can not do more,” van Bronckhorst said. “I talk to Nico on a daily basis and Nico has shown how important he is to this team today.
“We know how things stand and we’ll have to wait and see how the coming days will go.”
When asked if Jorgensen wanted to join Newcastle, van Bronckhorst said: “You do not have to ask Nico (what he’d do) if you get the chance to go abroad to play in the biggest competition in the world. But Nico is also dependent on the club and he knows that – even if he wants to go there.”
The Toon are crying out for a striker as summer signing Joselu struggles to have the desired impact, while Dwight Gayle has been largely inconsistent and Aleksander Mitrovic is expected to leave.
Owner Mike Ashley has finally given Benitez money to spend this month but it could prove too late as the Toon look to add to the loan signing of Kenedy from Chelsea before the deadline strikes.
