Van Bronckhorst enduring run-ins with fans; can Rangers offer him a return to Ibrox?

Rangers may still be in the market for a new manager this summer.

Graeme Murty may have impressed as Rangers’ interim manager, but there remains a strong chance that the 43-year-old will be replaced in the Ibrox dugout.

The Gers boss took charge following Pedro Caixinha’s exit in October, and after a move for Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes failed in December, Murty was handed the reins until the end of the season.

The former Scotland defender has largely impressed, but a 3-2 home defeat to Celtic coupled with Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock at Ibrox means that Murty may not land the job permanently, with other options possibly being considered.

Fans have been discussing who they would like to arrive in his place, and a popular name has been Feyenoord boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who made over 100 appearances for Rangers in a three-year spell at Ibrox.

The Dutchman may have won the Eredivisie title as Feyenoord boss last season, but a disappointing campaign this term sees the Rotterdam side sitting fourth in the table, a whopping 23 points behind league leaders PSV Eindhoven.

Disappointing performances this term haven’t gone down well with the De Kuip crowd, and Van Bronckhorst has this weekend told Algemeen Dagblad that he and his family have received death threats from fans, admitting that the messages he receives are ‘intense’.

Van Bronckhorst may move on this summer, with Vitesse Arnhem boss Henk Fraser recently telling FOX Sports NL that he would like a return to Feyenoord as their next manager if Van Bronckhorst leaves.

Problems with fans and a manager already eyeing up his job may just tempt Van Bronckhorst into leaving, and Rangers could be in a prime position to rescue him and offer him a return to Glasgow, especially as he was quoted by the Daily Record in November as saying that he loved his time at Ibrox and couldn’t totally rule out a move in the future.

With a European league title to his name and a history with the club, Van Bronckhorst may be just what Rangers need in their quest to chase down Celtic – and they may now have the ideal opportunity to land him this summer.
