A growing link between Rossi and Yamaha may reshape the MotoGP rider market.
Francesco Bagnaia’s long-term future at Ducati is increasingly uncertain, with the Italian expected to be squeezed out of the factory setup ahead of the 2027 season. Once Ducati’s clear leading rider, Bagnaia now finds himself playing a secondary role following Marc Marquez’s arrival and long-term commitment to the team.
With Marquez reportedly tied to Ducati through 2028 and Pedro Acosta heavily linked to a future seat in Bologna, speculation continues to build that Bagnaia could leave at the end of 2026. Having ruled out a move to a satellite Ducati team, the two-time champion may be forced to look beyond the Ducati ecosystem entirely.
Rossi’s Yamaha ties could influence Bagnaia’s next move

Yamaha have long admired Bagnaia and were previously linked with him during his struggles with the Ducati GP25. While no deal materialised for 2026, circumstances could change quickly as Bagnaia approaches the final year of his contract and Fabio Quartararo’s future at Yamaha remains uncertain.
This is where Valentino Rossi’s influence could become significant. The MotoGP legend remains deeply connected to Yamaha, the manufacturer with whom he won four of his premier-class titles, and his VR46 organisation has continued to maintain close ties with the Iwata brand.
According to reports from MOW, Rossi has recently entered a new partnership with Yamaha through VR46 Racing Apparel, acting as a brand ambassador. That relationship could provide Yamaha with added motivation — and leverage — to pursue Bagnaia as a marquee signing for 2027.
Why a Ducati exit may suit Bagnaia
Within MotoGP circles, there is a growing belief that much of the 2027 grid is already being mapped out. If that is the case, Bagnaia’s time as Ducati’s lead project may already be over, despite limited opportunity to reassert himself.
While the upcoming GP26 is expected to be more manageable than its predecessor, competing directly with Marquez on equal machinery has already proven to be an uphill battle. A move to another factory could offer Bagnaia a clearer leadership role and a fresh competitive environment.
If Yamaha’s V4 project delivers, the pairing could benefit both sides — giving Bagnaia a renewed title pathway and ensuring Yamaha are not left without an elite champion in their lineup beyond 2026.
